Free sewing tutorial and sewing pattern short sleeve t-shirt


Materials:
* 1 yard of jersey knits, 60" wide - In the woods, papercanoefabricshop (spoonflower)
* Ribbing

When working with knits, it is important not to stretch or pull the fabric while sewing. Also use a stretch needle and a stretch stitch. In this pattern all seams are sewed with a twin needle.

Step 1: Draw the pattern.
Print the sewing pattern in landscape mode in actual size and using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Draw the pattern with an aqua trickmarker on the back of the fabric. The seam allowance is already included in the pattern.


Step 2: Cut the fabric.
Cut a front piece, a back piece and two sleeves out of the fabric.

Step 3: Hem the sleeves.
Hem the sleeves. Fold 3/4″ (2 cm) and sew at 5/8″ (1,5 cm) from the outer edge. Mark your seam allowance with an aqua trickmarker on the back of the fabric. Fold the seam allowance to the inside and pin down. Sew the hems in place.

Step 4: Sew the shoulder seams
With right sides facing pin down the back and front piece. Sew the shoulder seams at 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance.

Step 5: Sew neckband.
With right sides facing, fold the neckband in half. Sew the ends of the strips together at 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance to create tubes. Turn the tubes right side out. Fold the tubes in half lengthwise so the wrong sides are together.

Step 6: Sew neckband.
Align the raw edges of the neckband with the raw edge of the neck opening, wrong sides together. Sew at 1/2″ (1 cm) seam allowance. Stretch the neckband while you sew, but be careful not to stretch or pull the sweatshirt fabric.


Step 7: Turn the neckband right side out.
Turn the neckband right side out.

Step 8: Sew the sleeve into the armhole.
Pin the left sleeve right sides together, into the armhole. Sew at 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance.

Step 9: Pin the sides of the shirt and the sleeves down.
Turn shirt wrong-side out. With right sides facing, fold the sleeves in half and pin down. Pin down the sides of the shirt.

Step 10: Sew together. 
Sew the sides of the shirt and the sleeves at 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance.

Step 11: Hem the shirt. 
Hem the shirt. Fold 3/4″ (2 cm) and sew at 5/8″ (1,5 cm) from the outer edge. Mark your seam allowance with an aqua trickmarker on the back of the fabric. Fold the seam allowance to the inside and pin down.

Step 12: Sew the hem in place.
Turn right-side out. Sew the hem in place at 5/8″ (1,5 cm) from the outer edge.
