Free sewing tutorial and pattern Boys Button Up Shirt


Materials:
* Fabric (Cloud 9 - Happy Drawing Organic Lions & Tigers)
* Fusible interfacing
* Buttons or Kamsnaps (1 cm)

Download the free sewing pattern from the list below.  Set your printer settings to A4 paper.

Boys shirt with long sleeves or short sleeves. If you want to sew the shirt with short sleeves or in sizes 6 months through 12 months, hem the sleeves instead of finishing off the sleeves with cuffs and sleeve plackets.

Step 1: Draw the pattern.
Print the sewing pattern in landscape mode at 100% on A4 paper or US Letter. Draw the pattern with an aqua trickmarker on the back of the fabric. The pattern is without seam allowance. Add 1 cm (5/8 inch) seam allowance. Add 2 cm (1 inch) seam allowance at the bottom of the sleeves and the bottom of the shirt.

Step 2: Cut the fabric.
Cut the front pieces (2x), the back piece, the yokes (2x), the collar (2x), the collar stand (2x), the sleeve plackets (2x), the cuffs (2x) and the sleeves (2x) out of the fabric. Attach interfacing to the wrong side of the plackets.


Step 3: Attach the right front piece to the yokes.
With right sides facing, pin the right front piece to the inner yoke. Place the outer yoke right-side down on top. Pin together.

Step 4: Sew yokes and front piece together.
Sew together. Serge the seams.

Step 5: Repeat for the left front piece.
Repeat for the left front piece. Fold the outer yoke upwards. 

Step 6: Pin the back piece to the outer yoke.
With right sides facing, pin the back piece to the outer yoke. Sew together. Serge the seam. Fold the back piece upwards.

Step 7: Attach the inner yoke.
Turn the shirt. Fold the seam allowance of the inner yoke to the inside and pin down. Fold the inner yoke upwards and pin down. Sew together.

Step 8: Sew the cuffs.
For sizes 18 months through 14Y: With right sides facing, pin down the cuffs. Sew around the outer edge. Leave the top open. Trim the seams. Turn right side out.

Step 9: Fold the cut line twice to the inside.
For sizes 18 months through 14Y: Fold the placket cut line twice to the inside and pin down. Sew. Try to make this hem as thin as possible.

Step 10: Fold the sleeve plackets in half.
For sizes 18 months through 14Y: Cut the sleeve plackets as shown on the picture. Fold the seam allowance to the inside and pin down. Fold the sleeve plackets in half. 

Stap 11: Place the placket pieces along the placket cut line. 
For sizes 18 months through 14Y: Place the placket pieces along the placket cut line. Fold the seam allowance on the top to the inside and pin down. Also fold the seam allowance at the back to the inside and pin down. Sew around the outer edge of the sleeve placket.

Step 12: Sew the sleeve into the armhole.
Pin the left sleeve right sides together, into the armhole.  Sew the sleeve into the armhole. Serge the seam. Repeat for the right sleeve.

Step 13:  Pin down the sides of the shirt.
Turn shirt wrong-side out. Pin down the sides of the shirt and the sides of the sleeves. Sew. Serge the seams.

Step 14: Serge the bottom edge of the shirt.
Serge the bottom edge of the shirt.

Step 15: Fold the seam allowance to the inside.
Fold the seam allowance of the bottom of the shirt to the inside and pin down. Sew the hem in place.

Step 16: Fold the seam allowance of the front pieces to the inside.
Fold the seam allowance of the front pieces to the inside and pin down.

Step 17: Fold the plackets to the inside.
Fold the plackets to the inside on the marked line and pin down. Top stitch along both edges.

Step 18: Make two folds along the folding lines..

For sizes 18 months through 14Y: Make two folds along the folding lines.

Step 19: Pin the cuffs to the sleeve.
For sizes 18 months through 14Y: Pin the cuffs to the sleeve. Sew together. Topstitch around the outer edge of the cuffs.

Step 20: Pin the collar to the collar stand.
With right sides facing, pin the collar to the collar stand. Sew together.

Step 21: Attach the collar to the garment.
With right sides facing, pin the outer collar to the shirt. Sew together. 

Step 22: Pin the inner collar to the outer collar.
With right sides facing, pin the inner collar to the outer collar. Sew around the outer edge. Trim the seams.

Step 23: Turn collar right side out.
Turn collar right side out. Fold the seam allowance to the inside and pin the collar to the shirt. Sew together. Topstitch around the outer edge of the collar.

Step 24: Stitch the buttonholes.
Using a ruler, mark where your buttons and buttonholes will go. Stitch the buttonholes. Cut the buttonholes open with a seam ripper. You could also use Kamsnaps instead.
